Join us right after the service as we listen together, refine our church's vision, and plan specific steps for both the short and long terms. Sunday, May 6th, 12 to 2:00.

We’ve just finished a long study of the book of Acts, hearing Jesus tell his followers to “go,” and then watching their stories unfold dramatically in the years that followed.

We’ve considered how we should respond to that command ourselves. As individuals and as a church community, where should we go? How should we do it?

Mosaic has answered that question before, and the effects were felt across the world. Because Mosaic and its members “went,” lives were changed and Jesus’ influence extended in Rochester, as well as New York, Japan, Mississippi, Chicago, China, Romania, France, Peru, Kenya, and countless other places.

But this year, we’ve found ourselves at a milestone moment in our history. If there was ever a time to re-examine our “go,” this is it. So, between now and August, we’re spending three Sunday mornings doing just that. Together.

After a shortened worship service, we’ll sit down, pull out our lunches, and spend a couple hours in prayer and discussion. We’ll refine our vision and mission statements and use those as springboards to develop our “go.”

So please pack a lunch, grab a notebook, and join us as we plan for the coming months and begin dreaming about the future.

Meeting Schedule

Meeting 1: Sunday, May 6th, 12 to 2 p.m. @Mosaic

Meeting2: June (TBD)

Meeting 3: August (TBD)

Childcare will be provided for toddlers and up.

The persecution following the martyr of Stephen led to a great scatter of the church in Jerusalem. This scattering brought the Gospel from Jerusalem to the world. This week look at Phillip’s story.

“Those who had been scattered preached the word wherever they went. Philip went down to a city in Samaria and proclaimed the Messiah there. When the crowds heard Philip and saw the signs he performed, they all paid close attention to what he said.”

“While they were stoning him, Stephen prayed, “Lord Jesus, receive my spirit.” Then he fell on his knees and cried out, “Lord, do not hold this sin against them.” When he had said this, he fell asleep.”

While drawing connections to Anakin,the Sith Lord, Eric “Tupper” Ware shares a message about the importance of mentoring and patience. Drawing on the experiences of the disciples in Acts, he confronts us with this question: What if Stephen had been mentored longer before his launch into leadership. Would he have had a longer life?

“This proposal pleased the whole group. They chose Stephen, a man full of faith and of the Holy Spirit; also Philip, Procorus, Nicanor, Timon, Parmenas, and Nicolas from Antioch, a convert to Judaism. They presented these men to the apostles, who prayed and laid their hands on them.”

Acts 5 opens with a difficult story. Two key leaders in the early church sell land, lie about the proceeds and die on the spot. We’re reminded that while God was revealing his grace, he also holds people accountable for their choices. A great sense of wonder and fear gripped the church and the whole region. Clearly something important was happening…

“Then Peter said, “Ananias, how is it that Satan has so filled your heart that you have lied to the Holy Spirit and have kept for yourself some of the money you received for the land? Didn’t it belong to you before it was sold? And after it was sold, wasn’t the money at your disposal? What made you think of doing such a thing? You have not lied just to human beings but to God.”

As we dig into the second half of Acts 5, we discover that the early church leaders were witnesses (the title of this series) to these truths:

They believed the following-

1. They were those who had been credited with the Divine mission of Christ.

2. That he was the Messiah.

3. That he died for their sins.

4.      That he rose again.

5. That he ascended into heaven.

6. That he sent down the gift of the Holy Spirit.

7. That he ever appeared in the presence of God for them.

8. That it was he who gives repentance and remission of sins. And,

9. He by whom the world is to be judged. *

Again, as in Acts 4, the religious leaders of the day are anxious, vexed, ready to kill the apostles, partly out of fear of the popularity of the message regarding the resurrection of Jesus. But again Peter and John ask: “Shouldn’t we obey God rather than man?” Strangely, after they are flogged (an incredibly painful punishment that often killed the victim) they went away rejoicing for the privilege of suffering for the Name of Jesus. In this message we dig into the boldness and resistance they early church encountered, and we’re challenged to be bold in the appropriate times as we bring “the full message of life.”

This week Pastor Don takes us back to the beginning of Acts. Looking at the lives of the Apostles after Pentecost, Don compares similar circumstances to the season Mosaic is currently in.

Then Peter said, “Silver or gold I do not have, but what I do have I give you. In the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, walk.” Taking him by the right hand, he helped him up, and instantly the man’s feet and ankles became strong. He jumped to his feet and began to walk. Then he went with them into the temple courts, walking and jumping, and praising God.

This week, Dave Everson wraps up the series The Witnesses. He draws from past experiences, dissapointments, and the story of the disciples in the beginning of Acts to create a fresh perspective regarding the future of Mosaic.

  “They were looking intently up into the sky as he was going, when suddenly two men dressed in white stood beside them. “Men of Galilee,” they said, “why do you stand here looking into the sky? This same Jesus, who has been taken from you into heaven, will come back in the same way you have seen him go into heaven.”

“I urge, then, first of all, that petitions, prayers, intercession and thanksgiving be made for all people— for kings and all those in authority, that we may live peaceful and quiet lives in all godliness and holiness.
Like a confusing piece of art, the Bible challenges us to see from a different perspective. The danger is that it is easy to mock that which we do not understand. This week, Sue Jacobs leads an exploration of the purpose of prayer, and the Holy Spirit as seen in Acts 4

“When the day of Pentecost arrived, they were all together in one place. 2 And suddenly there came from heaven a sound like a mighty rushing wind, and it filled the entire house where they were sitting. And divided tongues as of fire appeared to them and rested [1] on each one of them. And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit gave them utterance.”

Do these purposes even apply to a post modern society rooted in the ideals of doubt? What does it mean to be a witness today, to something that happened over two thousand years ago?

This Father’s Day, Mosaic is privileged to welcome Irvin Schwandt, founder and director of Rehema Home in Nairobi, Kenya. “Uncle Irv” is the only father figure that 60+ orphaned and abandoned children know.

Many of these kids come to the home having already tested positive for HIV. Outcast from society with no real chance at survival on their own, they are rescued into the safety of Rehema Home where they receive critical medical treatment, nourishing food and safe shelter to satisfy their physical needs.

But the mission of the Home extends beyond mere physical survival. The daily reality at Rehema Home is one of ongoing life transformation. By loving each child’s heart, educating each mind and guiding every precious spirit, Rehema Home empowers kids to rise from the depths of affliction and live healthily, happily and exuberantly.

What does obedience look like in the face of trial and disappointment? This week, Don concludes the “Dare You To Move” series by looking at some tough decisions Abram had during his journey of obedience. We find that every command from God comes with a promise.

After this, the word of the LORD came to Abram in a vision: “Do not be afraid, Abram. I am your shield, your very great reward.”

How does offense hinder you? Is it a natural human emotion, or a demonic scheme to snare you? This Sunday we have the privilege of hearing special guest speaker, Dave Buehring share a message about the importance of guarding your heart. He focuses specifically about being on guard from being offended, and how offense can hinder your life from reaching your full potential.

“I the LORD search the heart and examine the mind, to reward each person according to their conduct,

This series focuses on the three major areas that hold us back. Today we continue with the failures and challenges in life that pin us down. We examine the life of King David, and how he chose to respond in the midst of betrayal from his own son.

And David said to Abishai and to all his servants, “Behold, my own son seeks my life; how much more now may this Benjaminite! Leave him alone, and let him curse, for the LORD has told him to. It may be that the LORD will look on the wrong done to me, and that the LORD will repay me with good for his cursing today.”

What is the meaning of the resurrection of Jesus? The divine story of forgiveness and renewal should challenge believers to the core of their beliefs. Pastor Don brings closure to the series by emphasizing Gods forgiveness through Jesus, and showing the connections between Jesus, and the older brother in the parable of the Prodigal Son. Don challenges believers to examine their hearts, and seek to bring alignment to that which is blocking Gods love in our lives.

Due to technical difficulties, only the last half of the shortened Easter sermon will be available via podcast.

He told them, “This is what is written: The Messiah will suffer and rise from the dead on the third day, and repentance for the forgiveness of sins will be preached in his name to all nations, beginning at Jerusalem.

Luke wrote the third gospel, and the book of Acts—the story of the emerging church after the resurrection of Christ. Luke wrote in the Greek literary style of the time, to people who didn’t understand the Jewish law, but needed Christ’s salvation.
Why would Jesus go into a town, scan the crowd, and pick out the most hated man in the community? He then honored this Danny Devito-type character- rough, pushy, determined, the one everyone loves to hate. In this message once again Luke exposes the heart of the gospel: that Jesus breaks the religious rules, in order to show the heart of the Father.

But Zacchaeus stood up and said to the Lord, “Look, Lord! Here and now I give half of my possessions to the poor, and if I have cheated anybody out of anything, I will pay back four times the amount.” Jesus said to him, “Today salvation has come to this house, because this man, too, is a son of Abraham. For the Son of Man came to seek and to save the lost.”

Led by Darren and Heather Stevenson (who happen to be members of Mosaic), PUSH performs pieces that tell stories of hope, strength and optimism, stories that capture the imagination and stir the soul. Oh, and last year, they won Artist of the Year in Rochester.

It is going to be an exciting Sunday at Mosaic… at least, more exciting than usual. After the service, we will have coffee and an assortment of homemade cookies… and, I’m sure, plenty to talk about. We hope you will join us and bring along a friend.

To get more details, including directions, and easily share it with friends who might be interested, check out the Easter at Mosaic event page »

How is the Kingdom of God supposed to look in our lives, today in 2011? As we continue going through the Gospel of Luke, we find clues and hints about what the Kingdom of God advancing in everyday life looks like… “like a mustard seed”. However, almost in the next breath, Jesus makes a frightening statement in response to the question, “How many will make it into heaven?”:

He said, “Whether few or many is none of your business. Put your mind on your life with God. The way to life—to God!—is vigorous and requires your total attention. A lot of you are going to assume that you’ll sit down to God’s salvation banquet just because you’ve been hanging around the neighborhood all your lives. Well, one day you’re going to be banging on the door, wanting to get in, but you’ll find the door locked and the Master saying, ‘Sorry, you’re not on my guest list.’

Luke 13:24-27 (MSG)

This is about as politically incorrect as you can get in our day! Can we get beyond that and hear what Jesus is trying to say to us?

This week’s message from Luke 11 focuses on prayer: the essential connection. Jesus said- if you’d give your children their needs- how much more does your Father love you–and the greatest gift He wants to give you is the Holy Spirit. Why? It’s the wi-fi connection for your spirit to His. Mosaic Church is being called into a new urgency around prayer, to undergird everything we attempt, every conceived idea, every provision.

Dig deeply into this topic- it’s incredibly valuable. You might feel frustrated about prayer- don’t give up- learn and grow!

If you’d like to do further research on prayer, there are some great scriptures and quotes below under additional resources.

Spring Forward!

This Sunday, March 13– the clocks change! Which way do they go? “Spring Forward!” (New Yorker’s love any word with spring in it!)

So remember to set your clocks ahead an hour on Saturday evening!

What Season Do YOU Think Mosaic Is In?

Last Sunday was our first worship celebration in our new “home” for the season ahead. So many people put energy into painting, cleaning, artwork, lighting, staging, kids programs, café—the list is long. Despite a snowstorm- a lot of people showed up!

One of the big questions we’ve heard often:
“Is this our permanent church home or are we just here a little while?” There are several parts to the answer:

1- This is a season of rest after ten years of set-up and tear-down as a start-up church. It was amazing to just enjoy being together after service!

2- Mosaic really needs (from this point forward) a sense of “place” or “home.”

3- We are very excited about having the energy to put into ministry rather than logistics.

4- We have some foundational work to do as we get settled. This includes:
    a. Completing our new governance. This is changing the way we’re functioning. We’re
            rapidly increasing the number of people involved in vital roles.
    b. Nominating and installing new leadership into key positions
    c. Stabilizing our membership- defining membership and monitoring the signs of that stability
            in giving, attendance, serving, prayer, outreach and more.

5- Empowering Kevin Kelley and the Future Facility Team to guide the process of vision and strategic steps around our next facility.

6- We MUST be sure that as we move forward we are in agreement on vision, mission statement and strategy. The season ahead allows us the opportunity to prepare these areas.

This brings us to the topic of seasons. God, in His amazing kindness, prepared us for the season we’re currently in through our guest speaker, Dan Sneed at Summer Camp 2009. If you missed it, the main theme was: “pruning hurts, is uncomfortable, sometimes ugly, may be confusing, BUT IS ABSOLUTELY ESSENTIAL FOR FUTURE FRUITFULNESS.”

What Season Do YOU Think Mosaic Is In?

I’ve been reading Dr. Cloud’s new book: “Necessary Endings.” And sure ‘nuf- here are great insights on what pruning is about- just in time for us:

The tasks of spring include:
·      Cleaning out what is left over from the winter’s dying plants;
·      Gathering seeds;
·      Figuring out which fields you are going to work;
·      Making sure you have the resources to take you through the year;
·      Actual sowing and planting;
· Protecting seedlings from the elements and intruders; and
· Nurturing the vision of the harvest to guide the task.

Summer

In summer, things change again.

It is time to tend to what has taken root. The tasks of summer include:
·      Directing resources to ensure the crops are growing;
·      Preventing disease and keeping insects and other pests away;
·      Watering, fertilizing and pruning;
· Supporting the plants until they can stand on their own; and
· Monitoring, managing and protecting the crops for the future.

FALL is Harvest Time

·      Acting with urgency to get crops out of the field before they rot or are damaged by rain or the cold of winter;
·      Gathering the harvest completely, not leaving anything in the field;
· Harvesting with efficiency and watching the costs; and
· Harvesting with cares so you don’t destroy the field in the process.

In Winter Everything Dies…

…though preparations continue.

The tasks of winter include:
·      Getting the financials in order;
·      Squaring accounts with lenders for last year’s crops and lining up next year’s money;
·      Repairing equipment and getting it ready for next year;
· Preparing fields for the upcoming year; and
· Reviewing the successes and failures of the past year and tweaking things to do everything better next year.

Dr. Cloud adds: “The problem comes when we do not accept or we willfully ignore these seasons.”

Thank you to everyone who put in remarkable hours over the last six weeks to prepare our worship spaces:

Please forgive us if we missed your name! There were so many people working at all hours, many gave anonymously–you know who you are–THANK YOU!

Pastor Don continues the series on the Gospel of Luke called “The Divine Man: Luke’s journey with Jesus”. He talks about our role as believers to go out, and be the workers of the harvest. We are to meet the needs of those who don’t know Jesus. Don emphasizes that discipleship begins as soon as we know Jesus, not when we are perfect, and tells stories of some of the mistakes the disciples made as they grew.

Luke 10:2

“And he said to them, ‘The Harvest is plentiful, but the workers are few. Therefore pray earnestly to the Lord of the harvest to send out laborers into his harvest”

Pastor Don continues the series on the Gospel of Luke called “The Divine Man: Luke’s journey with Jesus”. This week while working his way through Luke, Chapters 7 and 8, Don speaks on the need for humility in the hearts of believers. Don emphasizes power of the lessons in stories and their application to todays church.

Luke 7:43-47

“…Then turning to the woman, but speaking to Simon, he said, “Do you see this woman? I came to your home; you provided no water for my feet, but she rained tears on my feet and dried them with her hair. You gave me no greeting, but from the time I arrived she hasn’t quit kissing my feet. You provided nothing for freshening up, but she has soothed my feet with perfume. Impressive, isn’t it? She was forgiven many, many sins, and so she is very, very grateful. If the forgiveness is minimal, the gratitude is minimal.’” (The Message)
